The Hotness Curve (how age changes a woman’s appeal)

Abstract

Testing the claim that women “hit the wall” in their mid-30s, a survey of ~6,300 men rating female faces across apparent ages found the drop-off in stated interest occurs in the early 40s, not the mid-30s — the mid-30s wall appears only in the eyes of men under 25. Men’s preferred age band shifts upward roughly three years per decade they age, and willingness to engage extends furthest for consequence-free casual sex, with public-facing “marriage” landing between casual sex and dating rather than at the far end.

Method

• The photo pool came from Ageguessr, a game where players guess the age of women in photos (some AI-generated, some real, including the author and friends). Real photos were scored against actual age; AI photos against a blend of the generation prompt and the average guess.
• This produced a dataset of photos paired with perceived age rather than actual age.
• From it the author selected ~2 photos per age, restricted to white-ish, conventionally very attractive faces (generated under prompts like “beautiful” or “supermodel”) — to give the pool the best chance and to strip out noise from racial preference variation.
• ~6,300 men, sourced from the author’s Twitter, were randomised into one of three scenarios (each man saw only one) and rated 15 randomly drawn faces:
  1. Casual sex — a 200-year-old vampire appears at your window wanting a one-night stand; no consequences, nobody will know.
  2. A date — she wants something serious and asks you on a date.
  3. Public perception — she offers to be your “public-only wife”; never intimate, but everyone believes you’re married, and otherwise you’re cursed to stay single forever.
• Respondents were never told the apparent ages of the faces.
• The vampire framing was chosen deliberately because the pool included AI depictions appearing to be under 18: it presents a being who is not actually a child but only in the form of one, with the scenario divorced from social judgment or consequences.

Casual sex results

• Taking 80% yes as “certified hot,” women rate as hot for sex between roughly ages 20 and 42.
• Interest climbs steeply and peaks around apparent age 24 (or ~28 in the eyes of older men).
• The top-rated two photos for casual sex were voted as 29 and 28 years old; the author’s theory is that slightly older women project an “I know what I’m doing” confidence.
• Equivalence points — the age at which an older woman draws the same yes-rate as a younger apparent age: an 18-year-old ≈ a woman in her mid-40s; 15 ≈ early 50s; 13 ≈ early 60s; 11 ≈ roughly 70.
• Yes-rates for apparent minors: 15% at apparent age 11, a third at 13, half at 15, ~70% at 18, ~90% at 24.
• The author flags that this is less pessimistic than redpill predictions and notes the data may be unrepresentative — men may be unwilling to admit attraction to sub-18 appearances — while pointing out there were six years of gains between 18 and 24.
• The wall depends on the observer’s age: the mid-30s drop-off appears only among men under 25. For older men it arrives in a woman’s early 40s, and older men gave equivalent ratings to an 18-year-old and a woman in her early 50s.

Dating results

• “Certified hot” (80%) bands for dating: ~21–28 for younger men, ~22–35 for mid-range men, ~28–45 for older men.
• The mid-aged skew toward younger women is attributed to voters clustering at the younger end of the 26–49 range; the bump shifts right smoothly as men age.
• Rule of thumb: each decade a man ages, his taste in women rises by ~3 years.
• Yes-rates by apparent age: 2.5% at 11 (possibly lizardman’s constant), ~a third at 15, ~two-thirds at 17, three-quarters at 20–21, peaking at 92% at 27.
• Young survey-takers are not driving the numbers much: minors said yes to other minors at ~45%, but 20–30% of older men also said yes.
• Men remain mostly willing to date women their own age as they age — and this is from photos alone, with no age information given.
• Note that the y-axis on the “average age said yes to” chart is the mean age of all women a man accepted, not a peak age.
• Aside: the author’s own photos were rated as looking 32; the men who found 32 most attractive for dating were around 40–42.

Public-facing “marriage” results

• Men liked this scenario less across the board, so the “certified hot” threshold was lowered to 60%.
• Bands at that threshold: ~20–35 for young men, early 20s to late 30s for the middle cohort, ~30–45 for older men.
• 20% of men aged 55+ said yes to images voted as minors. The author suspects partial trolling (though the slope is oddly smooth for that) plus older men who would be proud to have a barely-legal-looking partner, assuming she is legal and merely looks young.

Comparing the three curves

• Dating and public-marriage have an identical slope at younger ages; public marriage tapers off more slowly, running roughly 5–10% higher at older ages.
• This surprised the author, who expected public shame around age-gap dating to push appearance-only selection closer to men’s own age.
• Splitting by observer age (≤25 vs ≥50):
  • Older men rate older women about equally across all three scenarios, but younger women as more interesting for sex specifically.
  • Younger men are the reverse — younger women rate about equally across all three, while their casual-sex tolerance stretches upward for older women.
  • General pattern: men of any age tolerate large age gaps more readily for one-night stands than for serious relationships.
• Public-facing sits between dating and casual sex — contrary to the author’s prediction that the least sex-driven scenario would sit furthest from the most sex-driven one.

Sexual history effect

• High-bodycount men say yes 10–20% more often at every female age up to 65 than low-bodycount men.
• Low-bodycount men drop below 50% at a woman’s age 50; high-bodycount men sustain that for almost another full decade.

Conclusions drawn

• The wall is in the early 40s, not the early-mid 30s. Young men lose interest sooner, but by the time a woman is in her mid-30s her realistic dating pool likely doesn’t include them anyway — “you’ve got more runway than you think.”
• The steepest drop is from the early 40s into the 50s, and it mostly represents losing men close to one’s own age; appeal to much older men persists another decade or two.
• If 42 is the wall, 65 is “the pit” — the point at which appeal fades for most even of the oldest men, aside from a persistent minority.

Caveats stated by the author

• Respondents were almost exclusively men who follow the author on Twitter. She doesn’t think this biases age preference specifically, but it likely biases toward sex positivity and promiscuity, inflating all yes-rates.
• The data is keyed to apparent age from Ageguessr votes, not actual age; if perceived and actual age diverge, something about real-world manifestation may be missed.
• Charts were smoothed by averaging nearby ages — the raw lines were noisy given only ~2 photos per age and variation in individual photo appeal.
